Liz and Bee Boutique

First of all, I’d like to introduce myself. My name is Deanna Smith (@DeannaLuvsU) and I am a recent graduate of Clark Atlanta University. I’ve known Kirby since the days of being Mass Media Arts students; you know, classes together, working together in group assignments (Fab5), etc., and after reading different posts on askKirbyCarroll, I wanted to hop on board.  So now, I am a guest writer, and I too, will be making posts from time to time about fashion, entertainment, etc. Ok, so enough about me; I’m just gonna jump right into the interview.

Last weekend I spent my Saturday talking about fashion, new styles, and the power of entrepreneurship. Liz and Bee is an online boutique owned by Bianca and Bridgette Tatum.  Hailing from LaGrange, Georgia, they currently reside in Atlanta, Georgia as college students at Clark Atlanta University. I recently had a phone interview with Miss Bianca Tatum, and we just simply talked about the boutique, the future of the boutique, and just overall fashion.

(Q&A below)

So, tell me a little bit about you and your sister, and how you guys came up with the idea of your online boutique, Liz and Bee.
Well, me and my sister are twins; we’re like ‘day and night’. Um, she’s more on the business side of things and I’m a fashion major, so I do all the buying of the clothing and she does the marketing. I have always made jewelry and I’ve always had a website, and I wanted to sell clothing as well, but I didn’t want to do it by myself, so we decided to do it together.

So can you tell me a little bit about your jewelry?
I started making jewelry when I was 13; my cousin had a boutique called “Paper Dolls Boutique” and this lady made jewelry for her.  So I was like, ‘hey, I can make jewelry!’ So, I went and bought some beads and I’ve been making jewelry ever since, and I know how to make everything: necklaces, earrings, bracelets, etc.

What is the look of Liz and Bee, and what is the inspiration behind it?
The look is like chic, but classic and trendy pieces, but trendy pieces that you can’t find everywhere.  It’s inspired by college students; like, all the things that a college student would want to wear, but at a decent price.  We try to target girls at the age of 18 to women in her 30s.

I’m sure you guys have long-term goals for the boutique, but as far as short-term goals, have you achieved what you’ve wanted to achieve so far? Like as far as marketing and getting the name out there. How are people responding to it?
Well, it’s easy to find people to retweet you on Twitter or to repost a picture on Instagram, but it’s hard to get customers to actually buy things. So, right now we’re working on getting an ad in Kontrol Magazine so we can market through them to their audience versus just people in Atlanta, family, or people from school.  So as far as short-term goals, to hold an ad in Kontrol Magazine and also to just try to do well with our people who are buying things; make our customers, repeat customers.

Are you guys looking to expand one day? Like have your own stand-alone store or a franchise of stores?
Yes, I do want to have a boutique one day, possibly in the next year or two because I graduate in May, so we’ll see how online goes and how marketing goes for that, and then we wanna move towards opening up our own store.

FUN QUESTIONS
If you could name 3 stores where you think your clothing and accessories could be found in, which 3 would it be?
Ummm, Zara, Urban Outfitters, and maybe Anthropologie.

In your opinion, who is the best-dressed celebrity and why?
Oh goodness, um, I don’t want to say Kim Kardashian because everybody will say Kim Kardashian. So, I’m gonna say…I don’t know! Everybody who has style is creative. Like everybody does it, but does it in their own way. So, I guess I’ll say Kim Kardashian.  I feel like her style is innovative and different, and it’s always something new and fresh.

Do you have any advice for anyone who is looking to start their own clothing line or entrepreneur businesses?
I would just say to always keep your dreams in front of you and don’t let people discourage you. I will also say until you get your business started and off the ground, keep your plans to yourself because it’ll be a lot of people who can come by and just tell you, ‘well, don’t do this’ and ‘don’t do that’.  Stay focused and motivated towards whatever you wanna do, and just always stay true to yourself and your passion.

Well there you have it guys; my very first interview for askKirbyCarroll!! I really hope you guys enjoyed it! I also want to thank Miss Bianca Tatum again for taking time out of her day to be interviewed by me, and thanks to Kirby for allowing me to join her team of writers.

To shop at Liz and Bee, you can just simply go to the website (www.lizandbeeboutique.com) and make your purchases there.  Also, go ahead and follow them on twitter (@LizandBee) for updates and exclusives!

One on One With Model: LeAndrea Portis

Hello Everybody!

First of all let me start off by saying I missed you guys so much!  I'm in the process of relocating and it has been close to impossible to keep updating.  However, as promised we are back up and running and I am so excited for you all to see the interviews I have lined up!

The most recent interview was conducted a few weeks ago  with Model/Socialite LeAndrea Portis of Atlanta, Georgia.  Leandrea hails from my hometown Hampton, Virginia and has been modeling for the past four years.  Miss Portis has appeared in numerous fashion shows, grammy nominated music videos, and hosted events all over the east coast.

I believe what sets LeAndrea apart from many other "models" is her passion for the art.  She studies her craft, always has her portforlio present, and can name top designers at the drop of a hat.

LeAndrea plans on competing for the next season of Americas Next Top Model in a few weeks and judging by her portfolio and strong following I believe we will be seeing her on TV very soon!

The goal of askKirbyCarroll: First to the Stars is to get to know the stars before they are stars.  I believe Leandrea may be a prime example of this.  On a personal level she is an amazing friend and on a buisness level she is extreemly professional and easy to work with.

You can find her in D. Woods upcoming video, To the Bottom, 11Alive.com, and Kontrol Magazine's Masquerade Fashion Show video.

I'm keeping my fingers crossed for ANTM as I hope you all will as well.

One on One With 14 Year Old Superstar Michaela

Yesterday I sat down with the beautiful and talented Michaela Thurlow.  Michaela is a 14 year old singer, songwriter, pianist, producer, and dancer.  She is absoultely gorgeous and has a very strong and powerful voice that captivates everyone as soon as they hear her sing.

During our interview Michaela explained how she's had a desire to sing since she was five years old.  I find it amazing that many people spend their entire life looking for their passion and she was blessed enough to find hers before she entered grade school!  She has become a YouTube phenomenon performing popular covers such as We Found Love and Thinking about You.  However, what really has everyone talking is her new single Show Me, now available on iTunes.

Though, Michaela loves singing she also is very dedicated to positivity and cares a lot about her generation.  Currently, she is on a school tour along with a few other teen sensations to promote a campaign against bullying.  She also took time to passionately explain to me the difference between true inner beauty and outer beauty and how important it is to stay humble and true to yourself.

To hear more about Michaela follow her on twitter, IG, Facebook and Youtube at

@MichaelasMusic

Take a listen to the full interview to hear us talk about our love for Beyonce and Drake, guys needing to show and prove, finding your passion and Michaela gives us a taste of her singing ability! Its all in the Video! ENJOY!!

Also don't forget her single is available on iTunes NOW it's entitled Show Me and is getting more and more play everyday!

Update: Presidential Debates

Presidential Debates Recap

I'm going to be honest, I dont know how I felt about this one.  Romney put on a good show and one can tell he was very prepared.

However, I personally feel like a lot of his views changed during the debate.  Maybe he's trying to get that "47% percent" comment eliminated.

Presidential Debates: Round 2

The first round upset me a little bit.  However, my president flipped it the second time around! Social media has spoken Obama won the second  round of debates!  Obama spoke with his passion and conviction that Americans love.  However, what made him stand out from his opponent is his FACT.  Obama spoke with precision, passion, and POWER.

Please make sure you guys VOTE.   Every single  V O T E Counts!!

One on One with New RnB Sensation Renegade

Earlier this week I traveled to my alma mater of Clark Atlanta University to conduct another exclusive One on One interview with new RnB artist, Renegade.  Renegade is a native of Stone Mountain GA, and is making his mark on music with his upcoming EP "the Arrival."

Renegade has had a humble and extraordinary start in the music world.  He has been singing since he was young in the church choir and has definately put in the work to be where he is.

However, one thing that sets him apart from many others is his upbrining.  His mentor is the legendary Troy Taylor, who many of you may recall as Trey Songz manager.  Renegade's upcoming EP  also includes many other features by individuals who are no stranger to the music industry.

When asked how he does it, he simply explains  his love and passion for timeless music and internal drive to suceed.

Renegade was a nice person to talk to and the interview was very relaxed and comfortable.  It didnt much for him to explain his go-getter mentality, love for the ladies and lust for the beautiful Christina Milian.

Renegade's new single "Come on the Bed" hits itunes October 9th and has already been played on a few radio stations.  For more information follow him on twitter and like his fb page!

One on One with Michael McGrew

This past weekend I sat down with noted Author Michael McGrew and discussed his love for literacy, his favorite novel, and his personal inspiration.

Let me start by saying, Michael is a down to earth genuine and caring individual.  As a single father and former employee of BET he knows all about the balance of passion and hardwork. It is this drive that has propelled him into the excellent writer that he is today.

McGrew speaks from a place of passion and humility that is very much needed for our people and present time.  Currently, he is transitioning from fiction to non-fiction.  After the success of novels such as "My Kind of Girl" and "Taking Losses" I know that he will have a smooth ride.

Recently, he released a new read entitled Room 111 talking about the corrupt practices involved in the music industry and I speak from experience when I say it is definately a page turner!  Michael also has plans of attempting to break the Guiness book of World Records for most books signed in 2013.

To find out more about Mr. McGrew and his journey follow him on twitter @MichaelMcGrew and check out his amazing website AuthorsRock2012.com

Update: Clark Atlanta Adds New MBA Course Based On Michael Jackson's Success

As you may or may not know August 29th was thee great Michael Jackson's birthday.  My wonderful alma mater, Clark Atlanta University, has shown their respect to the musical pioneer by adding a MBA course entitled Michael Jackson: The Business of Music. The purpose of the course is to show the process to his legendary success.  It will focus on deals, negotiations, film projects, real estate, and merchandising.

The instructor of the course is Mr. James Walker, an author and noted entertainment attorney.  Walker has worked with powerful clients such as Shirley Ceasar, Bobby Jones, Jamie Foxx, Donald Lawrence, and many others.  Walker says, "The goal is to help students who have an interest or future desire to work in the entertainment industry whether as artist, attorney, business manager, accountant or other."

The course has created a lot of buzz!  I'm sure this is one of those classes that is going to fill up pretty fast!

Fashion: New Designer from the Hampton Roads Area

Last week I traveled to my beautiful hometown of Hampton, Virginia to speak with Joseph Moore.  Joseph is the founder of Millionaire Ambition, a new clothing line hitting stores very soon!  Check out our  exclusive Q&A below!

    Q. So what inspired you to start Millionaire Ambition?
    A. I was inspired by the people around me that's grindin, taking no days off, I felt like I should take that to the fashion world, and I just decided to start my own clothing line.  I  took it a day at a time and then one day there was Millionaire Ambition.

     Q. Are your clothes for men and women
A.Yes Millionaire Ambition is for men and women and babies too (laughs)

    Q. What do you think about men and women trends out currently?
    A. Fashion is okay right now, I like when women  mix and match styles vintage, heels and skirts, and jeans the next day.  As far as guys I just dont like the skinny jeans.  Cant get with it.

    Q. To get an idea of your clothes, give me an example of some brands that are similar to millionaire ambition?
    A. I'd say AKOO, Academics and Fly Society

    Q. Okay now I know AKOO is TI's brand.  Who is someone in the entertainment scene right now who you would say embodies Millionaire Ambition?
    A. I'd have to say Wale for males and Ciara for females

    Q. Allright, now since we touched on music who is in your CD player this summer?
    A. (pauses) TI, Wale, and Rozay

    Q.  Now you seem like a really laid back guy.  Are you in school?  How important is education to you?
    A.  School is very important to get you where you wanna be and it opens up doors to where you wanna go.  I'm in college and actually trying to get into photography as a minor.  All of it goes hand in hand you know camerawork, fashion, and photography, everything is a visual.

    Q. Okay now since you mentioned photography, are there any other hidden talents we should know about?
    A. I can rap and do a little spoken word.

(I asked him to give us a taste but he politely grinned and told us not today ;)

    Q. Ok now that I've talked your head off, please let us know--How can we order your clothes
    A. Im on all social media sites; Facebook (Joseph JDot), Instagram and twitter (@Mill_Ambition) so you can contact me that way and I'll mail it out to you. But I'm trying to be in stores in about two months

    Q. Wow two months, what cities are you targeting?
    A. If everything goes right  DC, Cali,  of course VA

Lifestyle: A Talk with Lauren Gray the National PRSSA President and Social Media Queen

On Friday August 3rd I traveled to the beautiful Centennial park to direct, produce and shoot an interview with National PRSSA President Lauren Gray.  The interview was corresponded by Taylor Terrell, Georgia Southern PRSSA president.  The conversation answered a lot of questions involving PRSSA, national initiatives, and making ones' self a brand.

With famous twitter followers such as Lady Gaga and President Barack Obama and being the president of a national organization at such an early age, one must wonder what is Lauren's secret.  Well honestly it is no surprise that she has made so many advances in her career.  She was full of energy, amicable and exciting to work with the whole day.  Yet, she kept a strong professional demeanor from the second I shook her hand to the moment the camera stopped rolling.

Taylor and Lauren spent the day speaking of how important social media is and how to reach members, followers, or fans for different organizations and projects.  Later, the conversation traveled to an even larger scale involving the PRSSA National initiatives such as Diversity Works and the outreach plans to include high school and community college students.

I was never involved with PRSSA in college and now I regret it.  After l learned how much it helped both Lauren and Taylor I think I should have looked into it!  With the school year about to begin I hope that many of you take a look at the amazing organization and make a different decision than I made!

Below is the interview.  Let me know your thoughts!

Also you can follow @Laurenkgray --National President @_denisetaylor --- GSU PRSSA President and of course my personal twitter account @askKirbyCarroll for more videos, posts, and updates

Politics: Atlanta Mayor Kasim Reed Speaks Singing in the Shower, His Love for Gabrielle Union and most importantly UNTIE ATLANTA

    About the event:
Last night I traveled through the hectic traffic of dowtown Atlanta to the W hotel for Political Cocktails.  The event featured  Atlanta mayor Kasim Reed and V103 and HGTV personality Egypt Sherrod.  Usually I am scared that politcal events are going to be a bit of a snooze fest but the event was nice and a creative way to get the issues out to our generation.  There was a dj playing popular music that appealed to everyone and free cocktails in the lobby.  I  also got to meet and network with many graduates of the AUC (Clark Atlanta, Spelman and Morehouse) and many other prestigious HBCU's that were doing major things in entertainment and politics.   There is so much focus on the negligent things our people are doing but moments like last night I remember we are  strong and pro-active.  Following the drinks and photo-snaps was the reason everyone was there the mayors' introduction and interview.

    The Interview
Now first of all after that interview I completly understand why Egypt has had such a high level of success, she is so natural with her microphone.  There are not many hosts who can get politicans to speak about their personal life and political views with such a relaxed demeanor.  Perhaps, one of the most eventful moments is when she gave mayor Reed a serious look and said so why aren't you married.  Reed then went into a beautiful speech about his view on marriage and jokingly explained his true love for Gabrielle Union causing the audience and social media to go bananas.  The conversation continued to range from his secret passion of singing in the shower, upbringing in Cascade,  power of our generation, to the internal care for the city of Atlanta and its people.  Then, he adressed the elephant in the room--Untie Atlanta.

    Untie Atlanta
During the conclusion of the interview Reed stressed the importance of voting for the bill on July 31. For those of you who are not familar with Untie Atlanta, it is a predicted solution to the knot we call traffic.  The problem arose due to the fact that over the next 30 years, at the rate we are going, 70% of transportaion funding will go to existing roads and systems.  This leaves little room for growth and expanision in other areas.  Also, the revenue from gas is slowly becoming little to nothing because of the new development for fuel efficient cars.  Because of the traffic and congestion, an Atlanta consumer will spend a little over $900 yearly in wasted gas.  These dramatic stastics are keeping away buisnesses and job expansion opportunities.

    The Solution
A $8.5 billion will go toward projects that include better transit such as MARTA, safety, biking, improvements, and technology updates.  These projects were created by residents and local governemnt.  The regions effected are Cherokee, Clayton, Cobb, DeKalb, Douglas, Fayette, Fulton, Gwinnett, Henry, and Rockdale counties.  Fifteen percent of the 8.5 will go back to each of these counties for specific local issues.

After being informed on the issue I know I will be there on July 31 to cast my vote.  How about you?  For further information visit www. UntieAtlanta.com  OR to register to vote visit http://www.sos.georgia.gov/

Update: Search for the new host of 106 and Park

I still remember the day I read Terrance J's story.  It inspired me so much that tears began to well in my eyes.  Now, usually when there is a story that touches me to this great of an extent its because someone conquered some immaculate feat or broke the barriers of racism or poverty.  Well for all I know this could be true or completely false for him but this is not what amazed me.  It was that his story was possible and plausible.  He went to a great HBCU, I went to a great HBCU.  He had just graduated when he was cast, I just graduated.  He was very focused on his dreams and aspirations I am and have always been dedicated to my dreams.

You see every now and then young adults need to know that their dream is attainable.  It is a great feeling to know that someone who is "like us" made it.  Now made it does not necessarily mean becoming famous or  rich.  It could mean received a higher education, found religion, or just exceeded their own personal mental barriers.  But just to know that there are other people who share that burn for their dreams and achieve them inspires me, and I know many other ambitious goal setters share my enthusiasm.

Personally, I always knew that I would to be in entertainment.  When I was young I wanted to act, as I grew older I learned I wanted to be behind the camera.  Now that I have matured and I am improving my level of confidence I know what I want.   I want to entertain and inspire.  This can be done in one or both ways.

So If blessed with the opportunity to be host of 106 and Park I promise to do just that, entertain and inspire.  I have a younger fifteen year old sister and I hope to be that individual who grabs her age group, while still having the maturity to capture the audience of my peers and elders.  My dream is to use my experience and love of the entertainment world to expand the worlds love of music and the arts.  My motivated, driven, energetic, and humorous attitude can be used to benefit the BET world and beyond.

There are a million things that people can and probably will say to limit me but I believe my passion and work ethic encompasses all of their doubts and all of my fears.

So please make the "Wright" choice and Vote for me by tweeting I want @askKirbyCarroll to be the new host of @106andpark
